My name is Howard Hansen, and I am fairly new to the list, I have
been lurking and learning for a month or two, and think I would
like stick around for a while.
I am an Eagle scout and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the
Arrow. I have been involved with my boyhood scout troop as a
Committee member and occasionally help with the board of review.
So much for ancient history. Recently I was asked to take over
as Committee Chair for my son's Cub pack and it's sibling Cub
pack at the neighborhood grade school. We are sponsored by the
PTO and have one committee to administer the two packs.(Three
years ago, there was one pack with over one hundred kids and
was split to make the meeting more manageable.)
I was active in the activities of my son's den for the past two
years, we have two great den leaders who keep things moving and
a bunch of involved parents. Life is good at our den level.
And life is good through rose colored glasses.
Things are different at the Pack level, one pack has a great
cubmaster (used to be CC),the other cubmaster has no clue, does
no planning. We have trouble getting den leaders from both
packs to round table and committee meetings. To date, it seems
as no one is keeping track of who is trained and who isn't.
It looks like I have my work cut out for me to get us
administratively up to date. We have our summer activities
planned and got a good turn out for our first activity last week
I will probably be spending the rest of my summer looking for
"volunteers" to beef up the den leadership and the committee.
I will probably need some motivational therapy to get our current
leaders trained and active on the committee.
I have enough sons left to keep me active in the Pack for another
eight years, my oldest is a Bear, I had a tiger sign up in May,
and I have another Tiger in the year 2001. I would like to see
them all get to participate in a quality program.
I look forward to sharing with the list in the future, I have
received a lot of good ideas in the couple months I have been
