I just got back from 4 days at our summer camp, MaKaJaWan, where I served as
cook for 12 boys and 4 adults who were getting the camp ready for our week
long Wood Badge based, Junior Leader Training program, we call Brownsea.
This is one of the reasons I do Scouting. Here were 12 young men, all Life or
Eagle, who had taken this course in the past, some of which who had served on
staff 2 or even 3 prior years. Every one of them wanted to be there. Every
one of them knew how to work together (whether they had seen each other before
or not is immaterial). Every one was a high quality Scout. What a pleasure
it was to be there.
This week the course participants are beginning the learning process: long
days and nights, "with copious free time." I do not have the ability to stay
this extra week, but the boys who go certainly are getting a quality program,
a quality experience. This is one of the "mountain top" experiences in
Scouting. I strongly encourage all Scouters to send their Scouts to these
programs. (yes I have encouraged my three sons to go- no none of them- all
Eagles or almost- have gone).
Yours in Scouting,
