Cliff - our favorite fishing hole is at the Rainbow Council Boy Scout Camp
in Morris IL (about 50 minutes from the Western Suburbs). They have a
great property that is also used for their Summer Camp. It used to be a
strip mine, and now the lake that is left over is only fished by Scouts
on weekends; and we know how poorly most Scouts fish!!! ;-)
Bottom line, there are LOTS of fish in this lake - we caught over 100 fish
one weekend in May a couple years ago. Our best spot (and most people's)
is off the dam at the south end of the lake. Just toss in a line with an
earthworm, no weight or bobber (hook of course), and a fish will find it!
Only caveat - starting about now until about the end of August, they run their
Cub and Boy Scout summer programs - so you won't be able to go there during
that time slot. However, call (815)942-1793 and talk to Bud (the camp Ranger)
and find out when you can camp there. The camp is big enough that you will
most likely be able to get a campsite any non-Summer weekend. Happy fishing!
