I have several postings of late about leadership positions to satisfy Life
and Eagle rank that basically indicate that some leaders don't feel that
these should count. Comments like, "I'd rather see a boy act as troop
historian than as a den chief" seem to indicate that the den chief
position is not important.
For the first time, last year, my den finally got den chiefs. And yes,
one is my son, and the other is one of his best friends that had been
with me since Tigers.
The sixth grade had a lock in where the kids did free babysitting for a few
hours then went off and had fun for a few hours. I was told later that
when our Tigers showed up, Charles immediately stepped forward and started
taking care of them.
I have heard good things about my son and his bear den. Two of my bear
dens are going to merge (against my better judgement) and have 14 boys and
4 leaders (please don't send me email on why they should stay separate,
flat of my "ordering" them to not merge, they're going to combine) They have
asked if I could get them another den chief for this larger group.
CJ and Charles are a big help at Pack meetings. I've been known to go up
to them and tell them they need to come up with a game in about 10 minutes
if the den doing the game has forgotten.
They both passed on a troop camping trip to help me with our Pack's crossover.
I told them I appreciated the offer, but would have no problem with them
going camping with the troop. They both informed me they were their den's
den chief and they would be there. They made a great color guard walking
the boys up to receive their graduation gift.
Charles also serves as a troop instructor, and my son is assistant patrol
leader. They are both going to be helping me on the BB range for day camp.
Neither boy needs the service hours for his Life rank (which they're both
They have learned to work with adults and have learned how to communicate
with a variety of personalities. They are giving back. I have seen
them mature quite bit in the past years.
