I appreciate Jason calling our attention to the NRA convention and the
press photo of the Boy Scouts being involved in Marksmanship Safety
Education. I was delighted to see the picture, it highlights an important
function of the National Rifle Association that is far too often overlooked
by the media. They would have us believe that the NRA is some radical
fringe group hell bent on arming everyone with an Uzi.
The NRA and the BSA have a long history of cooperation and joint efforts to
promote gun respect and safety. At hundreds of Summer Camps this year
Shooting Sports Directors will be certified by BSA National Camp Schools
where many will become certified NRA Rifle Instructors.
The NRA sponsors the annual Summer NRA National Postal Rifle Marksmanship
Tournament. Every BSA camp in the country is eligible to sign up. The NRA
will supply your camp with pins, certificates, and other materials.
The NRA also has a wonderful educational program with free posters,
literature, videos, and other resources for Boy Scouts and Summer Camps.
Tragic events in recent weeks at schools around the country have caused
knee jerk reactions from those who would advocate even tighter gun control
laws and more metal detectors in schools when what is clearly needed are
more safety and education programs that teach the proper respect and care
for Marksmanship. Groups like the NRA, BSA, State Hunter Safety Education
Programs, and JROTC have helped educate millions of youth to be safe and
responsible for guns.
The NRA has also been on the front lines helping the BSA preserve the
National Civilian Marksmanship Program which provides very inexpensive 22
shell ammunition for camps on the basis that having a well trained populace
is good for the national defense. Without this program many camps would be
forced to raise Summer Camp fees or discontinue Rifle Shooting Merit Badge
Finally, I reject the notion of the NRA as a partisan political
organization. The NRA is definitely non partisan as its political wing
supports candidates of both parties who support preserving the second
The new NRA, especially under the very capable leadership of Charleton
Heston, is a worthwhile organization for promoting responsible gun
ownership and safety and has been and shall continue to be a strong source
of support for the Boy Scouts of America in their own Marksmanship
Education and Safety Programs.
