pack shakedown idea

As some of you know, my Troop is going to Isle Royale Nat. Park this summer
(T-Minus 6 1/2 days & counting!!!).
Anyway, last week we had a final pack shakedown for everyone going. We
emptied every pack and went through them item by item, discussing various
choices & alternatives.
Then I handed out 3 balloons to each person and told them to pack them in
their packs. This represented the volume of the group gear (food, fuel,
etc) that each would have to carry. I handed out weights (from a weight
set), about 10 - 12 lbs. per person. This represented the weight of the
group gear that each would start out the week with.
I didn't catch this myself but one of the other adults said that some of the
boys were rather shocked by this. Although we'd been telling them about the
group gear they'd be carrying and that they'd have to save room I don't
think it really hit them until we did this simulation.
Anyway, thought some of you could use this idea.
