Thanks for all the responces both for and against the policy
of my ex-unit as we have decided to move to an Explorer Post
as soon as possible.
Most felt that the reason for an attendance policy was
because the scouts weren't coming to the meetings. That was
my units reason. The reason the scouts weren't coming is
because the program is "boring". One person suggested a
carrot instead of a stick and I agree. If your program works and
the kids feel that they need to be there, then an attendance
policy is moot.
One unit leader that I talked with here said that his troop had
wanted to do an attendance requirement. They threw out the
idea when they decided that if even one camp out or a few
meetings were made by the scout, then they might get him to
come even more once he had gone to summer camp.
Just about everybody said to find a new unit that the boy is
happy with and almost everybody that reponded said that the
boys should decide something like this and the adults should
Again, thanks for all the suggestions. YiS Terry
