I think that your advancement chair and your new DE are adding
requirements, and that if push came to shove they could be over-ruled,
although I'm sure it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.
I think your more immediate problem is getting your 17 year old
Prodding from Dad seems to be inversely effective, and obviously your
son and the new Scoutmaster have a conflict. Is there someone else
your son respects who could have a word with him? His old Scoutmaster?
The drama teacher? The Key Club advisor?
If someone he respects can convince him that he will be glad later that
he hung in there and earned his Eagle, great. If not, it sounds like
you have a great son who has gotten a lot out of Scouting. As a recent
thread has pointed out, that is by definition success, the Eagle would
be icing on the cake.
