Sorry if I'm coming into this thread late. I agree with Barry that the focus of
the troop should not be to crank out Eagles. Our troop is over eleven years
old. Tonight we have a COH for our seventh Eagle. I'm presenting the
candidate. In my remarks I state that we, as troop leaders, don't make Eagle
Scouts. I try to explain that, in a way, Eagle Scouts come to us. It takes a
certain quality, drive, desire, and inate leadership ability to become an
Eagle. I believe that those qualities come from within the individual, we just
try to guide them in the right direction.
In no way do I assert that a Scout is a failure if he doesn't earn the Eagle
rank. Any boy who spends time in the Scouting program will be a better person
because of it.
