Kevin Pate is concerned about the changes in the Webelos Book and this is
the first time he has heard of the changes. My guess is that many have not
heard of the revisions even though it has been discussed on this list.
Having worked on the handbook, I've still not received the proof copy, thus
I don't know if national has accepted all the changes the taskforce
recommended. If all changes are accepted don't be concerned about the
affect it will have on the Webelos program. Boys that are already in the
program will follow the current book. I've been told that there will be a
transitional grace period when the books become available. This period
could last upto 18 months.
Many changes may not be noticed, while others will stand out like a sore
thumb. There are some requirement changes that will only be required once
the Webelos Scout receives the new handbook. Just remember that he only
does the requirements in the handbook in his possession.
I ask that you read the requirement for the Arrow of Light. It states in
the present as well as the new handbook that the boy must be ACTIVE in his
Webelos den six months since completing the fourth grade. So it is not
possible to receive the AOL as a fourth grader.
National has recently released the new "Webelos Planning Guide". # 13-720.
If your council does not have copies, ask them to order them. They are one
of the freebee's that national gives out. It is a plan that helps the
Webelos Leader in adjusting the program to fit specific needs.
If anyone has questions please email me to save band width on our list.
