Utah National Parks Council used to provide camperships to Philmont's
Conservation Training Course to a few graduates from its own Junior Leader
Training, and in 1969 I was fortunate to get one. We got to Philmont on the
old Continental Trailways bus line, which went from Provo, Utah, up through
Cheyenne, Wyoming, and down through Colorado to Cimarron, New Mexico. A
24-hour ride, as I recall. To get a discount we travelled in uniform, and I
went with two other boys. We looked great in our Explorer green shirts, short
pants and those great red-tabbed garters on the knee socks.
At 3:00 a.m. the bus stopped for an hour at Cheyenne for servicing. Taking a
stroll around the the bus depot and we got minor discounts on hamburgers and
sodas. Walking around the block together a woman offered us discounts on
other services Scouts don't use. She said something about men in uniform.
Just wearing the thing can keep you out of trouble . . .
