I am a Native Dallasite.
I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, here in Circle 10, Dallas Texas. My
other half of 18 years was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout in
I graduated 1st in my class in High School. I was also, voted most
likely-to-succeed, VP of National Honor Society, Who's who in English,
Mu Alpha Theta, Latin Club, Spanish Club, Tutoring Club, E.L.O.C.,
and a couple of others. :)
I received the UT at Austin Ex-Students Scholarship for Dallas and the
Dallas Society of Petroleum Engineers of A.I.M.E. for Dallas - both
I left UT Austin after my father died and attended Eastfield Jr.
College in Mesquite, Tx. where I received an Associates - Magna Cum
Laude, Phi Theta Kappa.
I am a member of Mensa and Intertel.
Although my background is in VAX systems (17 years) , I am currently
doing internet technical support and enjoy the break from management.
I found out about Scouts-L thru researching the Gays /Scouting issue.
The purpose for my subscribing to Scouts-L is to provide some links,
information and hopefully (time permitting) have some communications
about this with others who care about this issue or are interested in
I became involved in this issue in December due to participation in
the CNN message bases on this topic.
I was really upset about the responses from people, many of them
scouts/scouters who tried to link being gay with being a pedophile.
As the Dallas Morning News Article of 2/16 said:
" Mike Montalvo, a Dallas computer technician, learned about the
petition drive through the Internet and has made it his passion.
A former Scout, he said the policy excluding gays is especially
hurtful because boys who join as Cub Scouts may not realize they're
gay until their teen years, when they're thrown out of a group they've
known most of their lives.
Everything you are, all the values you're taught, all the principles
you live by, are worthless in light of the fact that you're gay," Mr.
Montalvo said, "It's not people lining up to get in. It's people, once
they discover their sexuality, trying to stay in."
I have never used newsgroups or listservs before, so I'm still
