These are actually what was known as Skill awards. There were 12 in all:
Camping, Citizenship, Communication, Community Living, Conservation, Cooking,
Environment, Family Living, First Aid, Hiking, Physical Fitness, and Swimming.
These awards were used in the advancement process up until the rank of First
Class. After First Class merit badges were used instead. First Aid merit
badge was also required for First Class.
Some of these were also prerequisites for merit badges, ie. swimming for
swimming, first aid for first aid.
They were discontiued in roughly 1990, I'm not sure as to when. I remember
half the troop had them and the other half didn't.
Many people didn't like them. I personally did because it prepared the scout
for merit badges, in the way that you had to master a certain skill in order to
advance. Today they master a variety of skills for each rank.
They needed to earn for
Tenderfoot: Citizenship and one other.
Second Class: Hiking and First Aid and one other.
First Class: Camping and Cooking and one other and First Aid Merit Badge.
That is about all the info I can give you. Hope it was useful.
