This also goes back to the "which uniform is cool" question. Those
sports letters and medals were "tough" to earn. A patrol patch, Star
Scout emblem, etc. are just things you get for showing up to Scout
meetings. But I'd bet a patch from a Mountain Bike Trek or a spelunking
trip might be a different story.
Another thing that I thought of after my previous post is; whatever we
think of the uniform, it's highly unlikely that we can affect a change.
But we all can widen (better word than "change") our image locally.
Next time our boys are on a high adventure trip, how about sending a
picture - lot's of mud, action, whatever - to the local paper with a
small story. Have them put it in the sports section instead of the
local fluff section. In one of our local papers there's a writer who
mostly writes about his mountaineering, hiking, etc. trips. I'm
thinking of inviting him on our next mountain bike trek. The phone
