A wonderful reply. The responses we have seen have been written by adults.
You addressed the reasons why boys don't like wearing their uniform. We hold
a Venture Hike-o-ree each year that attracts over 700 Venture age Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts and Explorers. The uniform in the central base camp and on the
trail are "trailees". You don't see any scout uniforms. The kids have a
great time and are amazed when they meet some of their friends from school who
are also in Scouts. At the end of the event, each participant gets a Hike-o-
ree t-shirt that has been designed for that year only (we have had 8 so far).
There is no fleur de lis or the word "scout" anywhere on the t-shirt. However
there are words on the back such as Helen Keller's "Life is a venture or it is
nothing" or this past year "Without challenge, there is no achievement". The
kids come home and wear the t-shirts to school! I know the uniform is
important to the program and I fuss at my older scouts when they don't wear
theirs. I guess I like your philosophy of "show off what we do, not what
