I am the recruiting chair for our BS troop and we have a new Scoutmaster
this year after the untimely death of our old Scoutmaster.
The new SM asked that I not do any active recruiting b/c we had a decent
amount of kids and he was still trying to get a handle on things. I
agreed (in action, not in spirit). When people came to visit the troop
in Jan/Feb I did come with our display board and greeted them.
Despite all of this, we had one of the best recruiting years ever! It
turned out that the comments we got from the parents indicated the the
real recruiters were the boys! They told us the following:
*the boys were orderly (for boys) and well behaved
*they weren't mean
*they did not make fun of the Webelos, but included them in their
*the fact that someone greeted them and made them feel welcome helped,
but not to the degree of the boy's actions themselves.
This was not always the case and we have worked hard to get things
right. One of the worst (read: violent) offenders was called on the
carpet and required to have a parent with him for a period of time at
meetings and outings. He actually said at the last meeting, "We can't
play that game - the little kids will get killed." A 180 degree
If this sounds like bragging, it is. We are now the second largest
troop in the area and may have to turn kids away :(. I am so proud of
