I don't know anyone personally there, but here's some numbers to call:
Carlsle Barracks (the home to the US Army War College and a nice post!)
Army Community Services 717-245-4357
Post Operator 717-245-3131
Ask the Post Operator to put you in touch with Recreation Services. Rec
Services has a trout stream and three temporary housing structures. They
also have a Scout Hut, but my understanding is that the Troop there has
moved off-post. Realize that the Barracks area is small in size, and due to
the military drawdown, services are limited so offer to do much of the work
yourselves if you can. Ask to use one of the gyms and to camp outside the
gym area or close to the main housing area.
Army Community Services (ACS) can probably get you in touch with whomever is
serving as the present Scoutmaster of the Troop there...even though they are
off-base, maybe you can sleep in the old Scout Hut building if it's still
standing. The Army's going through a massive teardown and buildup and they
are using land that used to house those many WWII barracks that were built
to only last 20 years (many of them have lasted more than twice that time
My Military Facilties Directory (from Army Times) states that it has a
medium-sized post exchange and commissary along with a health and dental
clinic (no hospital).
I don't have Fort Indiantown Gap listed in my Military Facilties Directory.
I do have it listed as a Reserve Component installation, and here's the
limted information that I have:
Fort Indiantown Gap 717-861-2000
Outdoor Recreation Center 717-861-2622
There's not much in here except a listing of Army Reserve/Army National
Guard units there and the state headquarters. I would suggest contacting
the State Public Affairs Officer there and let them know of your desire to
stopover. There should normally be no problem at all, and of the two
places, I would try these guys first and then the Barracks next. Indiantown
Gap has lots of those old buildings and would probably sign one over to you
for the stay.
Don't forget about the National Cemetary there!!
I hope that I've been of some help to you, Marc...Sorry for the delay in
getting this answer to you...I'm working my email down the line, and as you
can see, I'm still on the "H"s!!
