MAJOR NEWS FLASH - Exploring Scouting to end as we know it!

This weekend at all hands conference around the country a major policy
change appears to have been announced.
The National Executive Board has taken action which effectively eliminates
the Exploring Division of the BSA.
Venturing will become a new high school division for high school aged youth
Career Exploring will move over to Learning for Life
Venturing will be coed & start at age 14 and will be set up for Explorers
who are in High Adventure Units, Religious, and other Outdoor type units.
Currently Venture is not a separate registered unit, after this change it
will become so.
Learning for Life will range from Elementary through High School & special
needs youth and will expand to encompass Career Exploring Programs & be
National cites a number of benefits and positive changes related to this
program but the last line is most telling.
"Lead to increased membership in both Venturing and Career Exploring AND
PROTECT OUR CORE TRADITIONAL PROGRAMS FROM LEGAL CHALLENGES"
(Translation, the Chicago, San Diego, and other law suits around the
country have the BSA concerned. By placing Career Exploring in a more
secular atmosphere so that it will be acceptable to public institutions
(read "belief in God" requirement) they can then operate Learning for Life
without the traditional requirements that participants profess a belief in
All of these changes are taking place August 1st 1998.
Hopefully no actual numbers of youth will drop and BSA will be able to stop
having to deal with entire communities dropping Exploring programs due to
the effects of law suits like the one that just was settled in Chicago.
