I would be very disappointed if this change comes about. With a large
number of Life Scouts, it becomes difficult to find enough leadership
positions even now to provide them with the opportunity to meet that
requirement without having Den Chief and JASM available.
I had a Life Scout transfer into Troop 24 last year, well after all of
the Patrol Leader and other offices were filled. As it turned out, we
needed someone to take charge of troop service projects, so I appointed
him to be a JASM. It has worked out well: he is getting some excellent
experience in contacting agencies and inveigling Scouts to participate.
Without that position or Den Chief, there would have been nothing for
him for six months!
And this year, I have my best Librarian ever! He is a Life Scout, and
he has used his maturity and training to make the position a real job!
And an older Den Chief is much more valuable to the Den Leader (less
likely to be another one of the kids!) and a much better role model
for the Cubs. How could they resist wanting to emulate that much
taller Scout who comes to the Blue & Gold Dinner with 20 merit badges
on that sash?
