Very well said. Although it has been 27 years since I
achieved the rank of Eagle, I still fondly remember the
nights of camping under the stars, cooking over an open
fire, working like the dickens at summer camp to earn both
the Swimming and Lifesaving merit badges during the same
week, learning the differences in the 3-degrees of burns, how
to use my neckerchief as a sling, bandage, etc.
On my soapbox: Sometimes I wonder what makes National
tick when it comes to achieving Eagle. Do they want to make
it so it becomes automatic if you stay in a Troop for x-number
of years, participate in y-meetings, and z-number of summer
camps. Sure, that would increase the number of young men
getting their Eagle, but I think that it would also lessen the
prestige associated with the rank.
