I must agree with Jon -- this was a big surprise to me. I've
always felt that the position of Den Chief is one of the
toughest in Scouting. In many cases, den meetings are at the
same time as troop meetings and accepting this position means
giving up time with your friends to be in service to others.
In addition, the Scout has to cut the mustered. A den leader
doesn't need another kid in his den, he needs a worthwhile
helper. A Scout that doesn't pull his own weight soon finds
himself without a leadership position.
And finally, unlike elected positions or other positions that
are appointed by elected Scouts, Den Chief is one of the few
positions that usually doesn't boil down to a popularity
contest. Most Scouts aren't jumping at the chance to be a Den
Chief which allows anyone willing to put in the hard work a
chance to prove themselves worthy to be Eagle.
