Thanks to all who replied to my message asking if there were any written requirements to
read the BSA merit badge books.
I got a lot of direct replies that the list never saw. To sum:
No, there is NO written requirement that the scout use/read the merit badge book.
BUT, most replies stated that the merit badge books were a VERY valuable resource for
the scout. In addition, a lot of replies felt that the MB councilor <sp> had a
responsibility to read the book themselves to ensure that they were in line with the BSA
way that a subject should be taught.
Those that committed on the feelings of my troop's adults about a library (felt that a
MB library would quickly disappear when the scouts did not return the books) pointed out
that that was the Troop Librarian's job to track the checkout of the books and the
scouts responsibility to be trustworthy with the material checked out from the library.
My feeling exactly!
I thank everyone for the replies. I will use your inputs to continue to press the other
adults on the committee to fund, at a minimum, a MB library of the required Eagle MB
books, and, hopefully, some of the other popular MB.
