Wow, what a great story on FOS. While I had very little
to do with it in my unit this year, we started and finished all
within two weeks time! It may be a little different in your
unit (mine is affliated with the LDS church, and sometimes
we get a little moral support and encouragement from our
leaders... I'm sure that helps significantly).
Anyway, in my ward (congregation), a good scouter and
gentleman volunteered (actually, he volunteered last spring as
part of his Wood Badge Ticket) to organize things for FOS
in 1998. Two weeks ago he called me up and asked for my
contribution. I said, "of course." Next he asked if I would
call four others in the congregation and ask for their support.
Ah, the real test of commitment. A little more slowly I said
yes. "And can you have it done by this Sunday?" "I'll try!"
It was much easier than I thought. Phone calls, then going to pick
up the forms and checks... By Sunday evening I had collected $295
and turned in the paperwork. Turns out that all the other people
our FOS chairman called did pretty much the same thing. Goal reached
in two weeks, and my effort was minimal.
Now, if we can just make sure that each year we have a Wood Badger
working on an FOS ticket item this time of year.
