My spider bite false alarm

Hello, the list!
Some of you might remember that I raised the possibility of a "merit badge
overnighter". Well, we had it last weekend, and this is what happened:
Everything went well (we did most of the Safety merit badge, and outlined
the rest of the work for the boys to do). We went to bed Friday night,
(in the church fellowship hall) and when I woke up Saturday, I had a
swollen spot on my left calf, which was swollen about half the size of a
ping-pong ball. It continued to swell and get dark, and by 1:00 I was in
the emergency room. One of the first possibilities mentioned was a spider
Right now, this does not appear to be the real cause (burst blood vessel
is the current theory). But, let me say, I have spent many hours
wondering "why didn't I look inside my sleeping bag more closely?"
Anyway, for those of you who have sleeping bags currently stored in the
garage, attic or other "spidery places", a little caution might be a good
thing before your next campout.
