I have rejoined the list after a 1 year hiatus. I am an Eagle, OA
Brotherhood member, and committee secretary for my sons' troop.
Now my question...I know that for Eagle there are alternatives if a boy
is uncomfortable with, or just plain old "can't" swim. Sports or
Personal Fitness merit badge instead of Swimming and Emergency
Preparedness instead of Lifesaving. What about the swimming requirements
for the lower ranks?? How come no alternatives?
I admit I never thought about it until my own son needed to pass it. He
is a strong swimmer as far as the ocean goes ( we live near the shore ),
but one straight swim without a break and the backstroke are frustrating
him. He is almost 16 and this is all that is holding him back from the
Scout camp is the ideal place to learn it and get it but he is
starting to work summers now.
Except for ADD he has no disabilities, so no special adjustments to the
requirements are necessary.
Again, I was just curious if anyone else has encountered this problem.
I had the same problem 20 years ago but aside from the merit badges
cannot remember how I passed the lower ranks.
Thanks for any ideas,
