This announcement is being posted simultaneously on Scouts-L and J-Scouts lists.
The Interfaith Religious Recognition Committee of the Grand Canyon Council
(greater Phoenix and northern Arizona) invites all scouts and scouters to
our annual Scout Sunday recognition program as described in the body of the
letter below. This letter was sent to all recipients of religious awards
during the past year in our council.
....Now we are inviting you to a Council wide recognition ceremony for all
boys and adults who have earned their religious awards in the past year.
Each year our committee sponsors this ceremony on the first or second Sunday
in February at a religious institution in the area, honoring the "Duty to
God" elements in the scouting program.
This year's ceremony will be February 8, at St. Helen's Catholic Church,
5510 W. Cholla in Glendale. Registration will begin at 2 PM and the one
hour ceremony will begin at 2:30. There will be refreshments served
afterward courtesy of the host troop.
To get to the church, take the I 17 freeway to either the Cactus or Peoria
exit and travel west to 55th Avenue. The church is on Cholla Street,
between these two main streets.
I hope to see all of you there....
Our committtee is composed of lay scouters from a variety of faiths and
religions who have the common goal of promoting the "Duty to God" part of
the scouting program. We attribute our longevity (over 25 years) to the
dedication of our members and to the fact that we have no clergy on the
active membership of the core group.
In addition to our Scout Sunday programs we sponsor ten commandment hikes in
urban areas the Friday after Thanksgiving, we have presentations on the
religious awards at our council University of Scouting, we have a booth
promoting the religious awards at our Scout-O-Rama, and we try to make
presentations at district roundtables at least once a year. Although not a
part of our charter, we also help the council find summer camp chaplains
when we can.
If we can help others form similar committees in other councils we will be
happy to share some of our materials, frustrations and ideas. You can
contact me at the email address in the header of this posting.
