There have been several posts lately about Scouting ahead and asking
about Leave No Trace. fortunately, I'm in a position to shed some light.
First of All, Leave No Trace is a national Non-profit program (actually
a corparation) formed to furhter teach and enhaunce the principles of
what was once called "minimium impact camping". They actually have a Web
Site at http://www.lnt.org. It is also used as the Name for the
principles as well. I am a member of Leave No Trace.
As to Scouting Ahead, It is a program based on Leave No Trace that was
originally developed by the National Forest Service and the Boy Scouts
in the Northwest. It was so successful that its author, Barbara Miranda
was Funded Full time by the NFS as the Wilderness Education Coordinator
and moved to the Yosemite Institue where I first made contact with her.
The program is already being offerred by some council High Adventure
team in Central and Northern California ( Including Alan Howser's). The
program does require specially trained Trainers , which up to now, has
meant NFS, NPS and BLM personnel. The program is being tested in this
configuration in Washington, Oregon and Utah. It will be offerred with
BSA Trainers in Southern California and Arizona (if they choose) This
fall with the BSA trainers getting certified this spring. Anyone in
Arizona that wants more info Email me directly.
Finally, BSA is preparing new awards based on Leave No Trace Which will
be out once they clean up the requirements that excluded Explorers and
their leaders from the awards program. Also there is a new publicatiion
" Passport to High Adventure" which has a Chapter on Leave No Trace.
More on the rest of the book later.
