In many communities, there aren't any alternatives to DARE, at least in the
schools. However, my wife mentioned to me this evening that about a year
ago, National Public Radio did a story on drug programs for youth, and
their effectiveness. DARE didn't even rank in the top 10 in effectiveness,
though it was overwhelmingly #1 in popularity and participation. She
didn't recognize any of the top programs. I should think, however, that
many police departments or highway patrols should know these other
programs, or drug rehab centers, if people are *serious* about offering an
alternative, rather than simply throwing a "dare" (sorry) to the list to
find something better.
