DARE helps -- I am trying to figure out why you are so critical about
the program? Have you only seen the results in your area? Well here in
Texas the program in the schools has done a wonderful job with the
LIMITED resources available.
You mentioned an increase in drug use in the past 10 years since the
inception of the program? Well in the past 10 years the population has
grown also and I believe you are looking at percentages rather than
actual students taught and passing the program.
As far as the "snazzy" patrol cars, they have been SIEZED from drug
dealers and have been forfieted after it was shown that the vehicle has
been bought with the proceeds from the drug activity. Then the vehicles
are placed into service to show the children what can happen to thier
property if they deal in drugs.
As far as the police are concerned -- the program establishes a good
relationship between the kids and the police ( I believe we can call
that a positive rool model ), and the kids see him as a friend and a
person they can talk to rather than a person they call only in
ASM Trp 88
