I have watched this thread with interest. Since I have been a long
time district rep. on unit Eagle boards, the responses fascinate me.
I think that the problem here is one of attitude (read Scout spirit).
The boy obviously wants to make a point about uniforms (or his lack
thereof). One would think if his objective was to be passed by the
board, he would not want to offend any one. Therefore, the best path
is to wear the uniform and demonstrate to the board what an Eagle
Scout looks like. On the other hand, if he was confident that the
board would pass him no matter what he said or did, then he could use
it as a forum to express his dislike of one of the methods of
Scouting. One wonders what kind of coaching his Scoutmaster and other
mentors gave him prior to the board.
If he continues into adult Scouting, he will make a good member of the
"Regulation Police" concentrating on the form without considering the
