Sounds like a neat idea. I'd suggest the following steps for painting iron
1. Wash thoroughly in soap and water to remove the machining oils. Dry
2. Use an oil-based metal primer to get a good base coat and oil-based
enamel paint if you want to change the color...I like spray cans or a spray
gun for a smooth finish.
3. Use oil-based gloss enamels to paint your decorations.
4. When you're finished, give everything a coat of spray clear finish
(gloss or satin as you prefer). This will cover the designs and ward off
wear, chipping and other damage.
