Yes, grown-up's toys cost a bit more but you still want to get your
money's worth. The thought of getting a GPS is so intriguing....
Some, I see, have street map display capability so are also useful in
the wilds of the city. But who in Scout-L land has any experience with them?
I see brands like: Magellan; Garmin; and, Eagle. Each has several
models in a wide variety of price ranges. So...
* What are your experiences with reliability, durability, battery life?
* Which may be waterproof?
* Of those which claim upload/download capabilities from a computer:
What does that do for you?
Which are PC vs. and/or Mac compatable?
Are there share-ware or thirdparty software so that a PC com-
patable can work with Mac?
Would this be the "stocking-stuffer" of preference?
Has anyone heard of the commercial availability (with voice synthesis)
of the military versions (accuracy to 1 meter) for the blind? And, just what
are the capabilities of the automobile mounted systems which are promoted in TV
advertisements for rent-a-car companies and upscale models - are those GPS or
some cellular hybrid?
