Here are a few easy, safe, and reliable ways I have started a
campfire for dramatic effect.
1. A little steal wool, a 9 volt battery, some wire, a tuna can of
sand and kerosine. The wire leads into the can which is set in
the fire with small twigs. Somebody off stage touches the 9
volt at the right time. The steal wool turns red hot and you have
2. A couple of 2x4 peices of wood about 1 foot long, sand
paper, 40 wooden matches, a drill, some twine, and 2 rubber
bands. 40 holes are drilled into one of the 2x4's. The matces
are inserted with heads up. The sand paper is wrapped around
the other 2x4 and a whole for a stake is drilled. The 2x4's are
put together and the rubber bands placed around the two. The
twine is tied to the one that is not staked in the middle of the
fire and when you give the twine a pull, the friction between the
two light the matches and you have fire.
3. An arrow, some wire, an old rag, and some kerozine. The
wire is strung between some high point and the campfire. The
rag is wrapped around the head of the arrow and the arrow is
attached to the long wire by some short peices of wire. The
rag is soaked in the special water and sent down the wire at
the right time and you have fire.
4. Same as # 3 except you use a roll of TP instead of the arrow
and wrap the roll in the rag. At the right time, Haileys comet
starts your campfire.
Timing is everything. Practice in the daylight so you can see
any problems. Nobody sits under the line of fire. Tell a good
story to preceed the lighting. DON'T let the boys do it by
themselves as they may go overboard with the special water
and an adult could keep them out of trouble. The older scouts
may not be impressed and some leaders will also "be not"
impressed, but webelos and cubs will be blown away by the
show. And after all, what is a campfire, but a show. Have fun,
but always be SAFE.
