At least in our council...
Our units are charitable entities. Donations to the Scout unit are tax
deductible. The unit is a non-profit organization that qualifies under
paragraph 501-C3 of the IRS code. You can do all the paperwork
yourself, if you want to qualify your unit for it. My old unit did just
that when it was formed so that we could receive donations from local
businesses. We later learned that it was unnecessary. Our council is a
paragraph 501-C3 organization.
Our units are chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. We are not
separate entities. Our assets are owned by the chartering organization,
not the unit. The unit exists at the whim of the council and the
