When we were a much smaller troop, we did have Committee Meetings on a
troop meeting night. But we quit doing this at least 8 or 9 years ago,
primarily because we ran out of space to have Committee meetings during
troop meetings. Maintaining discipline was also becoming a problem as
the troop grew.
In October & November of this year, we've averaged 62 Scouts at each
troop meeting, and I can't see us ever having enough space to hold the
Committee meetings on a troop meeting night. Plus we've made a
committment to our chartered organization that we will have adequate
adult supervision at all times during troop meetings.
We average 15-20 adults at each Committee meeting, with this falling off
somewhat during the summer. Currently, our PLC meets for an hour on the
first Tuesday of each month. The Troop Committee meets for 1 1/2 hours
on the first Thursday of each month. This seems to work well as the PLC
usually (but not always) gets an opportunity to meet and discuss plans
for future activities, problems and concerns before the Committee meets.
The SPL or an ASPL attends the Committee meetings and presents a PLC
report. JASMs are also welcome to attend but they usually don't as
Thursday night is a big "study" night for most of our high school age
