Hello the (Virtual) Campfire:
Now that we have closed escrow on and moved into our new home in
California, taken delivery of Household Goods Shipments, located an ISP and
resolved the technical differences between a USR Sportster Modem built for
the UK market and those for Domestic consumption, replaced the crashed
hard-drive and reloaded all operating systems and, oh, yes, registered with
the local district, it is time for a re-introduction.
I am Richard J. (Dick) Sullivan, Membership Committee Chairman and Unit
Commissioner, Chief Solano District, Mount Diablo-Silverado Council
(Pleasant Hills, California). I have been lurking and on occasion,
writing, from my workplace (with permission mind you) since arriving in
Fairfield California (outside Travis AFB) from my previous duties as CC,
then Advancement Chair for Troop 81 London England, and Assistant District
Commissioner-London (UK) in the Channel District of the Transatlantic
My fifteen year old First Class son, Steve is wavering on joining a unit
here, finding his interests vary with time and the ebb and flow of maturity
(Maturity, at Fifteen?!?). Will it be completing his open water Scuba
certification or a look at the aviation explorer post or the high adventure
post or just conquering another level of the current computer game?
[Sigh.] Steve has visited several troops and had a good time "auditing"
each meeting, but just won't make a decision. And NO, I will not force him
to join, but I certainly have considered that possibility. I mean, after
all, whose going to go Scouting for Food with me and whose sign up sheet
can I take to the office for Popcorn sales and who is going to lead the
jeering at my fancy dress costume (Smokey bear hat, shorts, knee socks) at
Summer Camp next year?
Anyhow, after over four months of living in temporary quarters (the
Holiday Inn does get old) and doing without Scouts-L and Rec.Scouting.***
and UK. Rec Scouting, it is indeed good to jump back in.
Oh, yes, if there is anyone on the list from Dyess AFB in Texas, I still
have the old Troop 96 Flag which hung in the Second Stanmore Scout Group
Scout Hut (in London) for a Quarter Century before we flew it at Gilwell
Park and over Brownsea Island in April. I lost the points of contact when
the hard disk crashed and the backup floppies never made it into the
household goods shipment.
