Our district conducts the indoor part of the training several times
during the year. We hold it during summer camp (entire council),
Fall Camporee and one more time before the end of the year. At our
Fall Camporee we had over 15 leaders attend!! (We had over 470 scouts
& scouters at the camporee).
We hold the outdoor part of the training every 3rd. weekend in
January. Even though we are in the South we have nicknamed it
"The Freeze Out". Last year we had over 40 leaders attend with a
staff of 26, our average temp. for the weekend was in the mid
30's (we had a warm front come in). We have found that each year the
staff grows as more scouters become involved and see how much fun and
fellowship we have.
We follow the BSA syllabus (for the most part) for our guidelines and
a little Wood Badge knowledge is tossed in for good measure.
The Staff does all of the cooking in order to speed up everything
and fit all of the training in. We have done it both ways as far as
cooking and have found that the "Trainees" get just as much from
watching the staff cook and asking questions about outdoor cooking
than spending 2 hours cooking and cleaning up.
