Yes I remember it, we were the ones who did it... raised a little over
four thousand too . You can do it too, but the first hurdle is to convince
your DE to let YOU do the presentation. Mine had a problem with this at
first, but after last year, they will let me try again.
I first presented some facts about our juvenile jails... how many they
hold, how many more they have it them, what type of problems seem to the
most prevalent. Then I tell them they help in preventing at least some boys
from winding up in a juvenile jail. I talk how the funds are used here at a
council level to help upgrade the local camp and to help all phases of
Scouting... which means helping boys.
Then the fun begins, I show what they "get" for their pledge, and show
them the FME table put up by the stage... highly decorated of course. Every
few minutes we have an update. Sometimes I ask them, sometimes they
"interrupt" the Blue and Gold when we hit a marker. That is a five hundred
dollar or better pledge, or pass a thousand mark, anything to bring
attention back to it. I even had the "clerk" call me on the cellular while
I was introducing the next Den... "Hey I am having a Banquet here... what
could be SO important... Oh, I see. Are you sure??? Are you absolutely
positive??? Uh, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just been informed that we just
passed the three thousand dollar mark!" Or something like that... of course
the conversation (my end) was spoken into the mike, and was completely
staged for the group. Of course Dan the Man Roberts led quite a few cheers
that helped get everyone excited!
As a side note, they have asked me to help "present" this year, and I
have refused. They key is NOT the presenter, but that it is someone in your
Pack who the boys and THEIR parents know. YOU have the right to ask for
money because you have been there for the boys ALL YEAR LONG.
If the BSA were smart, they would come up with an FME patch like the Big
Dipper (pun intended) and award gold "stars" for every $500 the Pack raises.
This would put a little contest into the event... wouldn't you want to be
the one in your district with the most stars??? I did it then for the boys,
and will do it this year as well... but gosh, just a little recognition
would have felt soooo nice after a good job done.
