There is a lot of discussion now about how we can get suicide prevention
training for Leaders. There have been many ideas, most geared toward
getting BSA National to provide the training. This solution is something
that could happen...someday. In the meantime, a lot of kids are going to be
thinking about suicide, and that's something that can often be prevented
with the application of a little knowledge.
Until your national Scout Association provides training (assuming it doesn't
do so already), the ball is going to be in our court.
So, as with other topics, we have put together the beginnings of a web page,
hopefully to grow into a few more, aimed at suicide prevention. You can
find it in the Serious Side of Scouting section of The Gaelic Wolf Scouting
You can use the information from the linked page sets to build your own
"suicide prevention" kit. Providing education to your Scouts and Leaders
will take careful planning and the help of counseling professionals, but
could easily save lives, if not in your Scout Group, then perhaps the life
of a friend of one of your Scouts.
It's not much, yet, but it is a beginning. You may have something to
contribute to the building of pages that are specific to your own
experience, or the experiences of people you know. If you have information
or experiences that might help prevent someone committing suicide, then
please contact me by e-mail.
I'm not an expert in the field of suicide prevention, by any means, but I am
going to be doing the same for my own Scout Groups. I'll be relying heavily
on the assistance of suicide prevention professionals, just as I am asking
Shouldn't we all give this some attention?
