A Webelos leader wants to know about BSA MB's... a list
You can go to yr council office and buy 1) a neat poster with "The Merits of
Scouting"--- colorful, but no legends
2)... buy a neat book with every badge and its requirements
3) ... buy individual merit badge books with all the requirements and
necessary info and skills to fulfill them
As to signing up parents or other MB counselors, no, they don't have to have
PhD's in their subjects. I bring out all the MB books we have in our troop
library for Courts of Honor, so parents can leaf thru them (if I remember...)
and then the Troop Committee Chairman (if he remembers) passes out the troop
resource surveys to all, esp to the new parents in the group. The parents are
all amazed that all they really need to be is pretty interested with some
experience in a field, a hobby, a sport, a skill to be a MB counselor. They
have to register w/ the BSA... a harmless, easy form... and the local council
will want to check their backgrounds via references, you should be sure that
all MB counselors understand the BSA Youth Protection guidelines (no 1-1
counselling, always 2+ boys at a time) and they should know that MB's have
requirements that cannot be changed.
It's a great way to get people involved in the troop and in the boys. For
example, I'm a nurse, and I teach the First Aid MB, Public Health, Personal
Fitness, and Medicine. Used to do General Science, but that has been
discontinued. I'm a mom, so I teach Family Life. I have always loved the
stars (my first MB was stargazing as a Girl Scout) so I do Astronomy. I have
been published in my field, so I do Journalism. I have a big computer DB on
my family's genealogy going back forever, so I do Genealogy. You can do this.
Just read the requirements and look at the MB books, and you'll see.
Have a ball! PS, I started with a Tiger den, too... and now look at me....
