Re-introducing Ms. Deschanel

Hi! Janet-Claire here!
Well, folks, I've been reminded by seeing some new introductions that
perhaps I should re-introduce myself! I was on the Scouts-L list a few
years ago, but the talk seemed more oriented towards Boy Scouts than Cub
Scouts, and the volume was overwhelming, so I signed off after a while.
Now, my Cub Scouts are Webelos and are getting ready to move up to Boy
Scouts in the spring, so I've "come back" to listen especially for ideas
on transitioning the guys.
Ahem. My name is Janet-Claire Deschanel, and I'm a Webelos Den Leader
with a pack in Northern Virginia. I know that I'm fairly young for a
Scout Leader (26), but my parents were both quite active with Scouts
Canada, and my brother, Clifford, was REALLY active (Rover!!) many years
ago, and they all encouraged me to get involved. About four years ago,
I heard that our neighborhood was starting a pack and needed leaders, so
I stepped in to assist with the Tiger Cubs. (My next-door neighbor had
a son who wanted to join, so I had a special friend at the very
beginning!) The next year, the person who had planned to keep on as the
Wolf Den Leader had to leave, so I just took over from her. (The joke
in my family is that I was looking for a great place to meet young men
in uniform!) I have lots of support from the families of the boys,
which has made all of the difference.
I spent most of my youth growing up near Montreal, Quebec, but I've
traveled all over. I came to the Washington DC area for my university
studies about ten years ago and just never left. I work for a fairly
large service organisation, and time is always at a premium, but I
really get a charge out of working with the guys!
Sometimes I think that this may be my last year with Scouting (peace at
last!), but the pack has been hinting that perhaps I could start working
with new Tiger Cubs -- and do it all again! Hmm. I'll certainly have
to mull that one over. It's nice to be asked. We will see!
