Well - it's taken 18yrs of preparation, patience, hard work and a lot of
fun... but my son, Jason, had his Eagle Board of Review last night and
passed... needless to say - I am one proud father. He worked very hard to
achieve this (as I'm sure all others before him have done as well).
I say 18yrs, because right from day 0, I believe we begin preparing for
His project was to 'rebuild' the deck on the Parsonage for our Sponsoring
organization - Trinity United Methodist Church of LaGrangeville,NY
Oddly enough, this deck was a previous Eagle Project many years before. The
father of that Eagle Scout still belongs to this church... The project
required him to remove/replace the existing deck floor, remove rail, replaced
w/ a new/improved bench rail. The posts and joists were still in good shape
and did not need replacing... He solicited funds from local lumber stores,
and from the Sunday School Group w/ in the church (they have a fund to help
youths of the church w/ projects specific to the church) and from the
Board of Trustees (whom had to approve the project).
The project basically took 3 days. He and I tore off the old deck floor and
rail 1 night after work. Then an entire day following to start the rebuilding
process... and 1/2 day next day to finish rail...
It looks great and the entire church org. loved it... The benefit is now
meetings can be held on this deck w/ plenty of sitting space (2 of the 3
sides of the railing is a bench rail), as well as meetings w/ pastor and
community folks, and the youth group can meet there as well...
The 'down - side' of this journey is he could have done this 2 yrs ago... but
like many of our young men (Scouts) they become caught up in so many other
things and don't make time or don't have time to put into projects ... But
through prodding from Dad and Scout Leaders and Church Leaders - he decided it
was time to do this... and so I believe he learned a valuable lesson - Time
An interesting comment from him while doing the project... He said to me,
Dad, I can't wait to start building my own house or deck... This is fun.
He had plenty of help and at times too much help... At the end, he was
a proud Scout - beaming from ear to ear...
So - Now we're beaming from ear to ear in his accomplishment.
