I understand your concern, Dan. I've normally seen one of two reactions by
the PARENTS when transfering from Webelos to Scouts:
1) I know all about Scouting, I've been doing it for 4 years, & here's how
it should be done...
2) Boy Scouts is Boy Led, so I don't have to do anything...
Occasionally, I find parents who recognize the change, but they seem to be
rare. My answer to this problem: When I was SM, and the Webelos came to
the troop for their "Troop Visit", we asked the Webelos parents to come
along. Then, we split the parents from the youth. The Webelos attended
the troop meeting, & acted as a "patrol" (with lots of help from their Den
Chief, the prospective Troop Guide, & ASMs) in planning thier part of the
upcoming joint campout. In the meantime, the Committee Chair gave a
presentation to the parents that was basically a quick & dirty intro to Boy
Scouts & Troop Organization (with emphasis on the role of the Committee!),
cribbed from the Fast Start & ScoutMaster's Fundamentals, Part II.
I won't claim it solved all the problems, but it did seem to reduce the #
of parents in the above 2 categories, & I could normally convince the ASMs
I got from the crossover to attend the full ScoutMaster's Fundamentals (of
course, it helps that the troop paid for the course).
