Hi Cheryl! You asked us:
>Among the urban myths is the one that Eagle Scouts get a discount on
>their auto insurance.
>We've now had 6 Eagles with 5 different insurance companies be told >that
there is no such discount. A Good Student discount, yes, Eagle >Scout, no.
Mutual of Omaha did offer some form of "discount" for those that have
acheived Eagle Scout or First Class/Gold Girl Scout status. V.J. Skutt was
one of the senior members of both the BSA and GSUSA's National Executive
Boards for many years, and was trying to get other companies to offer
similar discounts and markdowns to Eagle/Gold Scouts.
USAA and GEICO (both of them mainly catered to military personnel but a
while back GEICO went to "the general public") also offered some sort of
unpublicized discount to Eagle Scouts (don't know about Girl Scouts). I
have automobile insurance with USAA and as part of the application process,
I asked if they offered such a discount (I was in college at the time and
could use all of the breaks I can get...I STILL do!) and I was told to
photocopy a copy of my Eagle Scout card and mail it to them with the first
month's premium. It was reflected that I had made two payments on my
insurance the following month, so I guess I did get some sort of "discount".
I've heard from fellow Eagle Scouts that GEICO did the same thing...but it
was something you had to ask for, not something that they volunteer
outright. Of course, you also had to supply them with a copy of the Eagle
Scout/Gold Scout card!
Hope this helped!
