On October 19, C.A. Schutze Jr., a long time volunteer with the Capitol
Area Council in Austin, Texas, passed from this life at age 75.
Mr. Schutze, a graduate of the University of Texas, was an attorney and
had been active in the insurance business for many years. He served in
World War II aboard the USS Mobile where he directed the ship's band.
Mr. Schutze, involved in Scouting for more than 60 years, was an Eagle
Scout, Vigil Honor Member of Tonkawa Lodge 99, and had served as a
Scoutmaster, Camp Commissioner and member of our council's Executive
Board. He received the Silver Beaver in 1952.
I first met C.A. Schutze in June, 1986, while he was serving as a Camp
Commissioner at the Lost Pines Scout Reservation. At that time, I was
a rookie Scoutmaster of a new scout troop. I learned a great deal from
Mr. Schutze during my week at camp as he was always willing to offer
advice and answer my questions. He was interested in herpetology
(snakes) and our Scouts certainly enjoyed seeing the snakes that Mr.
Schutze brought to summer camp in 1986.
Over the years, C.A. Schutze Jr. had a very positive effect on the lives
of thousands of young boys. He was a dedicated Scouter and his presence
will certainly be missed!
