Webelos to Boy Scout

I am toying with the idea of writing up something for Roundtable to address
the fact that many boys, who excelled in the Cub program, seem to drop out
within a year of joining Boy Scouts.
I have seen the "Webelos to Boy Scout" packet that our council has put out,
but it seems to address the mechanics of having the boys visit troops, make
sure they cross over in time to go to summer camp, etc.
I'm looking for help from the list on some practical suggests on how to better
prepare the boys for Boy Scouts. Having just gone thru this with my den last
year, I have some ideas of what we did right, and what we could have done
I know when the boys had been Webelos for over a year, it came out in casual
conversation that I would not be their den leader, or their Scoutmaster. I
was shocked by how upset they got. I then prepared them for the fact that
they probably would not stay together as a patrol and explained that they
may stay as a new scout patrol, or be separated and put into existing patrols.
Quite frankly, I would not have addressed this, had this conversation not
occurred. I never thought that THEY thought, I'd stay as their leader.
Additionally, we helped the boys make dinner on their first campout. After
that, they cooked for themselves and their parent. We camped several times,
each time emphasing that they had to do more on their own than on the previous
campout...which was discussed PRIOR to camping.
Any other suggestions?
