To all the fine members of Scouts-L;
Just finished a fabulous weekend of activities and had to share them with
all of you. Saturday morning was the 10th annual Red Buck Cub Anapolis, and
after sharing this with quite a few on JOTI, Saturday night, I feel I should
explain this great event with everyone else. Cub Anapolis is a 4 lap race
around a short track with pit stops after each lap. Cubs make a car out of
cardboard before the day of the race. Pit crews are made up of at least 1
parent, and 2 others, usually adults but some use siblings. The track is
about 30 yards long, total with an area in the pit areas. We ran heats of 6
racers at a time with the top 3 finishers in each race moving on to the next
round until we had a championship bracket for each rank.
Pit stops were made after the first 3 laps. The first pit stop was for
cleaning the windshield. A pit crew member wiped the boy's face with a
paper towel. The second pit stop was a refueling. A 4 ounce cup of water
was handed to the boy which he had to drink. The third pit stop was the
tire change. Lace up shoes were required. The shoes were removed, the
socks were removed and turned inside out, put back on and the shoes were put
back on and re-tied. The last lap was then run.
This year, around 130 boys participated with plaques being awarded to the
top three finishers in each rank of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos 1 and Webelos
2. Also awarded was the People's Choice for best looking car. More
information on this event can be found on our website at:
and while you're there check out the rest of the site.
After this fun filled event, many of the boys stopped by our local Community
College where the Delta County Amateur Radio Club had set up a field
station. Many contacts were made on JOTA.
Upon arrival at home, we fired up the computer for some JOTI and chat with
scouts and scouters around the world. My thanks to them and to everyone
else who made Saturday one of the best Cub Scouting days my family has ever
I've really got that Cub Scout Spirit now.
