I have written before re: hazing and Venture Crew and got some wonderful
direction from people on the list.
This time the plot thickens. As background - our SM of many years died
rather unexpectedly last Spring. Since he had been at the job for so
long, he made it look easy 8->. Our new SM has not been very happy in
his job and is planning to quit this month. He never quite got it
together and was (my opinion) so overwhelmed with the job that he didn't
even know what bits to delegate. I don't even think he knew what all
the bits were. He also didn't let us know when things fell through and
the boys have been disappointed with several outings not living up to
the plan. I think where we end up after the first year from the SM's
death will tell the tale.
We need to choose a new SM, but I want to go in a little more prepared.
What I would like to do is to analyze all the parts of the job and make
sure he is supported by the rest of the troop adults. We have many
adults who would lend a hand, but only a few good SM candidates. What
are the main jobs and the smaller jobs of the SM? What must he retain,
and what could someone else do?
We are also thinking of possibly doing a co-SM type of position with
each overseeing different job aspects and sharing others. Has anyone
done this successfully?
I personally am determined to see this troop get back on track. I think
it would be a poor tribute to the late SM if we didn't. I am looking
forward to your responses. Let me know if I can clarify anything.
