No. Discontinued merit badges do not count towards ANY advancement if
they were earned after they have been discontinued. Think of the havoc
of everyone wanting to learn First Aid for Animals, Beekeeping, Rabbit
Raising, etc. The boys can still be happy about the learning
experience, but the badge should not count.
Note: If the badge was earned BEFORE it was discontinued, then it WILL
count for a rank advancement that occurs after that date.
There are a lot of Merit Badges that have been discontinued or
consolidated or separated (Rifle and Shotgun used to be together).
Pick up an OLD scout handbook sometime and look at some of the merit
badges that used to be required. You'll get quite a hoot. I was
reading a scout handbook from the 60s the other day. Very nice and
frank discussion on how to bathe. Boy, have we come a long way...
