I have to agree and hope folks bring in more good ideas. Lately I have been
spending a lot of time working on training because I think it really helps
the success of the Troops.
For slight difference with the BSA JLT tape, I added a few movie clips from
Star Wars and other popular movies to show the different types of
leadership the JLT tape talks about. Not much, a couple of five minute
clips. Also, one day I had to give the JLT session where the lunch came at
about 3:00. So instead of sandwiches, we had a banana Split snack. It
accomplishes the same thing because there is so many ingredients to make
the splits. It worked very well and achieved the JLT goal at that point in
Last Fall we had a four hour training night with our new Patrol Leaders
(PL) where we first let them watch the adults perform a simulated PLC
meeting, then we went strait to a simulated Troop meeting where we broke
into Patrol corners. We then had a 20 minute talk on Patrol positions (from
the PLs standpoint), a talk and proper flag etiquette for presenting the
flag, and set up a ideal camp site (from the adults point of view). All in
four hours along with pizza.
The part the Scouts said they learned most was the PLC and Patrol Corners
meetings. Before then they didn't really understand what a Patrol Corners
was meant for. We have a long way to go.
I am not replacing the BSA JLT tape, it very much has it's place. We are
just adding training in the areas where we are having troubles. I hope
other people give their ideas because it is helping our program and I need
more ideas and besides my job is Troop training and I have this need to
